Head of Policy, International

Overview

As the lead representative body for the profession, The Bar Council represents 16,000 practising barristers in England and Wales and promotes their specialist advocacy and advisory services.

The Bar Council endorses the interests of the Bar to the Government, parliamentarians, the media and other stakeholders, both domestically and internationally, and in the public interest.

Working in partnership with the many members of the Bar who serve on the elected Bar Council and on committees, they cover wide-ranging issues including social mobility, remuneration, international work and law reform.

The Bar Council are in search of an accomplished policy and advocacy specialist to manage their international policy team, developing strategy to influence regulatory developments and advocating policies on international legal practice matters. Reporting to the Director, the position is responsible for managing and developing a team of 2. You'll need to be a fantastic leader and communicator, capable of ensuring collaboration with Specialist Bar Associations, Government Departments and NGOs.

Key remit:

  • Promoting the good standing and the interests of the Bar abroad and domestically
  • Working with relevant international associations and professional bodies within the UK and abroad to advance the interests of the Bar
  • Working with the Director of Services and other colleagues to deliver services to the Bar, identify new income opportunities and maximise the commercial success of the Bar Council
  • Identifying issues and policy options, informing the Officers, Chief Executive and Director of Policy and leading the execution where appropriate
  • Developing relations and liaising with UK and foreign diplomatic establishments for the benefit of the Bar on domestic and international issues
  • Securing external funding for policy programmes where appropriate
  • Line management of one Policy Analyst and one Policy Project Officer
  • Managing designated budget in collaboration with the Director of Policy, Director of Services, and Head of Governance.

You'll need:

  • Extensive experience of policy development
  • Understanding of the importance of the Bar's work within the domestic/international legal and business communities
  • Strong leadership and relationship management capabilities
  • Flexibility with a positive attitude to change
  • Ability to manage talent and develop line reports
  • Ability to analyse problems and seek solutions
  • Ability to command the attention and respect of Bar leaders, Bar Council Officers, individual members of staff

Desirable

  • Degree in Law or related subject
  • Experience of service delivery within a membership organisation
  • Experience working within regulatory frameworks
  • Experience working within an international environment
  • Knowledge of Institutions of the European Union, overseas legal professions or foreign jurisdictions

Based in High Holborn, The Bar Council Operate Hybrid working with a minimum of 2 days per week in the office.
