Guest Article: Sam Hollister, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at OVO Energy
In this edition of our guest article series, we hear from industry professionals who’ve carved out inspiring careers in their respective fields. This time, we sit down with Sam Hollister, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at OVO Energy, to explore the journey that brought him to where he is today.
From his early days as a graduate economist in the UK civil service to shaping energy policy at one of the country’s most forward-thinking energy companies, Sam shares the experiences, challenges, and valuable lessons that have shaped his path. Whether you’re just starting out in your policy career or looking to take the next step, his honest insights and advice are not to be missed.
Why did you get into Policy?
I joined the UK civil service as a graduate economist, not really knowing what I wanted to do after completing my university course. I soon enjoyed the variety of working in public policy, covering key issues for the UK government including trade negotiations, local growth deals, skills policy and energy security.
What attributes/qualifications have helped you succeed?
It's all about influencing people and putting forward sensible policy options. So you need to be able to develop relationships, understand different people’s viewpoints and priorities, and be able to win an argument with evidence.
What are the biggest challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Working in a trade association with 100+ members all with different priorities and business plans, and trying to establish a common vision for the future energy market that everyone could align on.
What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learnt in the workplace?
Be nice to the administrative teams and personal assistants. These are the real people that make the office function and can be of the most help; whether that is ensuring that you get paid on time or finding those ten minutes in a senior managers diary.
Who is the most memorable person you’ve worked with and why?
Lord Heseltine.
When he entered the room, everyone stopped what they were doing in order to listen to him and his opinions. I didn't agree with every policy idea he had, but I trusted him because of his experience and charisma.
What do you think will be the biggest industry challenge in 10-years’ time?
Reaching net zero is going to be a huge challenge for the sector and society. It's not just about the cars we drive or the way we heat our homes, but about what we eat and how we live our lives.
Finally, what piece of advice would you give to your younger self reading this?
Listen more and talk less.
