Overview

Role Overview:

As a Principal Design Engineer in the water industry, you will be responsible for leading the design and development of water infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects. This role requires a deep understanding of water engineering principles, regulatory requirements, and project management practices. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective solutions that meet the needs of clients and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

Project Leadership:

  • Lead the design phase of water infrastructure projects, including water treatment plants, distribution networks, wastewater treatment facilities, and stormwater management systems.
  • Provide technical leadership and direction to project teams, ensuring that design objectives are met within scope, budget, and schedule constraints.

Design Development:

  • Proficient in the full design cycle. Develop conceptual designs, detailed engineering plans, and specifications for water infrastructure projects, considering factors such as hydraulic performance, water quality, and environmental impact.
  • Utilise engineering software, modelling tools, and industry standards to produce accurate and comprehensive design documentation.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure that design solutions comply with relevant regulatory requirements, codes, and standards governing water infrastructure design, construction, and operation.
  • Liaise with regulatory agencies, permitting authorities, and stakeholders to obtain approvals and permits for design and construction activities.

Quality Assurance and Control:

  • Establish quality assurance processes and procedures to ensure the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of design deliverable.
  • Conduct design reviews, risk assessments, and quality audits to identify and mitigate potential issues and ensure compliance with project requirements.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Collaborate with clients, consultants, contractors, and other stakeholders to understand project objectives, requirements, and constraints.
  • Communicate design concepts, progress updates, and technical recommendations effectively through written reports, presentations, and meetings.

Innovation and Continuous Improvement:

  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement in design methodologies, technologies, and best practices within the water industry.
  • Identify opportunities for optimisation, efficiency improvements, and cost savings in design processes and project delivery.

Team Development:

  • Mentor and coach junior design engineers, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment that encourages knowledge sharing, creativity, and teamwork.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's, Master's degree or equivalent in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or Process Engineering
  • Chartered engineer or working towards chartership preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in water infrastructure design and engineering.
  • In-depth knowledge of water engineering principles, hydraulic analysis, and water treatment processes.
  • Proficiency in engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, WaterCAD) and design standards (e.g., AWWA, ASCE).
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, manage project budgets, and deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Commitment to quality, safety, and sustainability in design and project delivery.
